How Painting Aluminum Siding Can Transform Your House
Aluminum Siding looks beautiful when it’s new. But, once it starts to age, if it’s not maintained, it can appear tired and faded. The good news is you can transform it and turn back the hands of time with a little elbow grease, cleaning, and a few good coats of paint. Aluminum siding is prevalent in our Chicago suburbs because it’s so insulating against our frigid winters. Plus, it’s low maintenance – but not maintenance-free. You still need to keep it clean and patch any holes and repair damage right away.
Repairing Aluminum Siding
Just as with any exterior house painting project, it’s vital to repair or replace any damaged siding. It is a bit more involved with aluminum. Here are the supplies and steps to take:
You’ll need ladders, aluminum siding, gloves, tin snips, utility knife, 5-in-one, silicone caulking.
- Be prepared and wear gloves. This siding can be very sharp when you’re repairing it, and you don’t want to cut yourself.
- Mark the section of siding you want to replace and cut it out carefully
- Get a replacement section of siding ready – make it a few inches larger than needed and remove the nailing strip with tin snips.
- Apply the silicone caulk on the back of your replacement piece and press it in place, wiping off any excess.
Aluminum Siding Preparation
Compared to other types of siding like Hardiplank, aluminum siding can require more prep, especially if it’s been neglected. But some steps remain the same, including removing any peeling paint and old cracked caulking. Power wash siding will remove dirt, but if there is mold or mildew, you’ll need to bleach those areas. Let the siding dry totally before painting.

Painting Aluminum Siding
Before you start painting, make sure you have all the windows covered and any roof sections that might be exposed to paint.
You’ll need two different types of paint to do a good job that will last for years.
1) Exterior Oil-Based Paint
2) Exterior Acrylic-Based Paint
Use a premium brand of paint like Sherwin Williams, Behr, or Benjamin Moore. You’ll use the oil-based paint first. That’s applied directly to the siding to act as a barrier between the siding and acrylic paint. Once the oil paint is completely dry, apply the acrylic-based paint. Don’t use the acrylic paint directly to the siding because it will bubble, fade, and peel.
